Patio Spaces: Using Them Year Round

When I bought my home, the patio had a lot to do with my decision. I saw it as the perfect place for parties, cookouts, and lounging in the sun. What I didn't realize is that the right accessories would allow me to use the space year round. I compared several retractable designs offered by different patio cover companies before I found the right one. I've also purchased portable heaters that allow me to use the space for outdoor events when the temperature is a little nippy. If you like the idea of using your patio any time of the year, stick with me for a few minutes. I'll tell you which accessories I bought and how I use them. Before long, you will also be able to enjoy your patio no matter what the weather is doing.

Sealing A New Concrete Sidewalk

If you have a newly installed concrete sidewalk on your business property, you are most likely enjoying the convenience it gives to your customers as they make their way to your establishment's door. It is very important to seal a concrete surface regularly. The sealant acts as a protectant that will increase the life of your concrete surface and help keep it structurally safe for everyday use. Here are some general information about concrete sealants to help you select the right kind to use, as well as some guidelines to follow when sealing your concrete sidewalk on your own.

Why A Concrete Surface Needs Sealing

If you live in an area where there is a freeze-thaw cycle, concrete will go through a restricting and expanding phase according to the weather. This, in turn, can cause damage to the surface of the sidewalk. Sealing it will protect it from inclement weather as well as make it look nice. Even in other areas of the country, where the weather is more consistent, your concrete could also fare well with a sealant. Adding sealant to a concrete surface will ward off stains, repel debris, and help the surface resist abrasiveness.

The Type Of Concrete Sealant To Use

If you plan on using a sealant because of cold weather, buy one that will repel moisture. An acrylic-based sealant or one made of resin will work best. If you wish to keep your concrete sidewalk from contracting stains, a siliconate sealing agent will do the job. Sealants that repel water and ice are invisible in color. There are also sealants available that enhance the coloring of the walk, allowing you to protect it while making it eye-catching and different from neighboring properties. You can also tint a sealant if you wish to have a unique color. You can buy concrete sealer online or in a local hardware store, although it may be easiest to find the most variety online.

How To Apply Sealant To Your Sidewalk

Wait until your concrete is completely cured before adding a sealant to its surface. To apply, use a roller or sprayer. If you decide to use a roller, you can attach it to a broomstick to give you stability as you roll from a standing position. You also have the option in crouching down and doing it at a closer level. Make sure to use knee pads if you take this approach. A sprayer will give you an even coating with ease. Make sure to cover any landscaping with tarps or sheets before applying a sealant covering. This will help protect them from the chemical agents the sealants are made from.
